Perimetric explores liminal states that emerge from within the intersecting and interpenetrating boundaries and limits that exist between attention and inattention, sound and music, audience and performer, intention and chaos. While technology has the capacity to provide high levels of compositional complexity and rhythmical perfection, Perimetric situates itself in curated imperfection. This illuminates the hand of the artist upon the machine.
Perimetric is the brainchild of Adam Cantor and David Barton. Both artists have predominantly been involved in acoustic music, encompassing such diverse elements as old-time Appalachian music, classical sitar, and orchestral mandolin. Despite being focused now on an electronic sound, many aspects of these analogue traditions find their way into Perimetric’s performance and ethos. In terms of creative approach, the echoes of traditional music manifest themselves in the blending of electronic and analogue instruments, and the way that such admixtures require us to ask where the line between established forms and innovation lies.
Perimetric is the instantiation of ambient music as praxis, and in this the project asks what is assumed, and what is discarded when one moves between the boundaries of musical idioms. This approach interrogates the demarcation of limits, whether imposed or chosen in pursuit of creative expression. Such limitations can include concerns regarding genre, but they can also involve questions about appropriate instrumentation and/or audience expectations.
The duo performs live, improvised ambient music featuring synthesizers, laptops, lap steel guitar, effected six-string electric guitar, and vintage toy keyboards. Perimetric strives to create a meditative, contemplative atmosphere that envelops the performance space.
